Jan. 4th, 2006 @ 03:26 pm Proposal for the Community
Following up on an exchange I had in this post, I wanted to propose an idea to get the community up and running again.

Perhaps rather than voting on a specific movie each month and selecting it, the mods (I'm happy to volunteer as one-the more, the merrier) could propose a genre for the month and make suggestions on examples of movies in that genre. What movie the community member suggests would be up to them. I think this will help expose the community to a wide variety of movies, exploring types of films they may not have seen before, but giving people more options to participate.

What I envision is a mod announcement of the theme each month, and then posts of suggested films, film reviews, discussion questions, trivia, etc. Off-theme notes and recommendations would always be welcome.

For themes, we could go with "out of the box" . . . rather than just saying "Action Films," we could do "films with great car chases," rather than "independent films," "indie films by first time directors," etc.

What does everyone think?

Hey. Guess what. This community isn't dead, it was just hibernating. We need to revamp it so if you're stil watching, give a shout out. I'm looking for several new co-mods. Who's got some bright ideas? I need to see who's still willing to be active here.
Cheers

Aug. 6th, 2004 @ 10:01 am Citizen Kane
If you all haven't gone out and seen Citizen Kane yet, I would highly, highly recommend it. It is one of the most technically accomplished films ever made.

The camerawork itself is my favorite aspect of this film. The scenes I would highlight:

1. The initial opening scene with the closeup on Kane's lips saying "Rosebud," and the rolling snow globe.
2. The shot through the window of the young Kane in the snow.
3. The use of vertical lines during the party scene at the newspaper.
4. The montage with Kane and his wife and the newspapers.
5. The scene with Kane's wife completing a puzzle.

I would recommend, as a companion, the documentary Visions of Light, which is a fascinating look at the history of cinematography, and does a great analysis of Kane.

I would also recommend if you get the Kane DVD, that you watch the documentary Battle Over Citizen Kane, which provides an excellent, excellent background on the film's controversy and the campaign to prevent it from having any critical and commerical success in its time.

MOVIE TITLE: Secretary
CATEGORY: Contemporary - Drama
DATE OF MOVIE: 2002
SYNOPSIS: IMDB Summary
RECOMMENDED?: YES! One of the best modern "love stories" out there. A real conversation starter.

MOVIE TITLE: Shattered Glass
CATEGORY: Contemporary - Drama
DATE OF MOVIE: 2003
SYNOPSIS: IMDB Summary
RECOMMENDED?: Yes. It's one of the best structured and best acted films I've seen in quite awhile. Peter Saarsgard is exceptional.

MOVIE TITLE: The Manchurian Candidate
CATEGORY: Classic - Drama
DATE OF MOVIE: 1962
SYNOPSIS: IMDB Summary
RECOMMENDED?: Yes. I saw this movie when I was very young and it left a strong impression. I think it would be a neat comparison, since the remake is out now.

MOVIE TITLE: Vertigo
CATEGORY: Classic - Drama/Suspense
DATE OF MOVIE: 1958
SYNOPSIS: IMDB Summary
RECOMMENDED?: Yes. I love Hitchcock films, and this is my favorite of them all. Jimmy Stewart's performance is a 180 from what you expect, and the theme is just as chilling today as it was 50 years ago.
